Salem Lutheran Church in Austin
One of the former churches I visited October 23 was Salem, the first American Lutheran Church in Texas to call a woman pastor. The congregation has declined though the neighborhood has grown and become more Hispanic and now the church shares its building with Holy Family Catholic Church.
When Lynn and I were there, the Lutheran Book of Worship was introduced and we had to explain to some old style Lutherans why the creed was saying catholic church instead of Christian church. Some said there was no way they were catholic. Now, 40 years later, they are sharing their building with Catholics. I wonder how the church will change in the next 40 years.
