Prayer as an Excuse for Inaction
Following mass shootings and other horrific events, public leaders often call us to 'remember the victims in our thoughts and prayers." In too many cases prayer is the only solution proposed.
Surveys are now showing a significant number of Americans think prayer is what religious folks do when they do not want to get involved in actually solving problems but want to appear to be doing something. To paraphrase Karl Marx, "Prayer is becoming the opiate of the people."
How can we keep prayer from becoming an excuse for inaction?
